Music What is it? Music has "evolved" from song. Just like the Birds (no, he didn't say the Byrds!...), Song started to be used to get the news around. Oppression first really started one day when the Court Singist (singer in Yorkshire speak) got on the King's nerves for singing absolutely everything the King did. You know? - All the naughty bits! The King had the singer put to death, but then something miraculous happened - another singer started to sing, and another, then another... So many sang that the King couldn't put them all to death, because if he had, he would have only had the deaf and dumb to rule over ;D Songs and therefore Music, have become an essential part of life. Music, especially music containing lyrics, balances life - - if it were not for lyrics, hypocrissy would be rife, what do I mean? Hypocrissy is where the Royal personage can intellectually say Bugger! But you or I cannot intellectually say f**k without causing offence. The act of Buggery does not lead to any fruit, whereas the act of f**king does. Do you get the picture? As Neil Tennent of the Petshop Boys (forgetting sexual orrientation) sang "Music is the World's Salvation..." in "It's Alright" So music is more than just a "nice tune", it has a purpose, and music with purpose is what I'm into. When I really started to discover my record collection I marvelled at how nearly every single record I'd ever bought, sang about the corruption of our planet. I had not gone out to the record shop with the intention of buying "protest songs". I had bought these records because I had heard of a particular artist or group, either from friends, or on the radio, or seen the band live, and enjoyed the music, not realising at the time the content of the lyrics. So who are these "revolutionaries"? I'll just list a few... Mike and the Mechanics, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Chris Rea, David Bowie, Supertramp, Don McClean, Santana, Cat Stevens, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Yes, John Miles, Genesis, The Pet Shop Boys, .... In coming threads I'm going to attempt to explain the real meanings behind the lyrics of these musicians, but why? I have this awful suspicion that music is seldom heard these days, although it is often played! I feel I will have to do this right now, without too much delay, as some of the stuff and my comments could, in future years be banned. Now am I being paranoid? I think not. You only have to listen to the spoken news - things like "....if it had got through Parliament, even Magnacarta could have been rewritten or axed..." We, as the people of this planet, are going through very dangerous times, except there are sufficient decoys (World Cup for one...) to distill and prevent the "average man" seeing the true picture of events. Listening to music is akin to seeing behind the curtain, as the "Rickmonster" quoted in another article featured on this forum. I think it is time we all saw the little man who is pulling our levers, and Music my friend, is a very good eyeglass in which the "naughty bits" are revealed. G.

Try the new Morrissey album Graham "Ringleader of the Tormentors" no hidden meanings just full out in your face "as it is" One of the best albums in the last 10 years IMO.
Mikester.
EDIT: I don't need "David Bowie" or Chris fckin Rea to tell me what's going down in the world, I'm so "other side" I could teach them a thing or two about the meaning of life and the way things are hangin' at the moment...........

"Mike and the Mechanics, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Chris Rea, David Bowie, Supertramp, Don McClean, Santana, Cat Stevens, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Yes, John Miles, Genesis, The Pet Shop Boys, ...."
...Jefferson Airplane,Volunteers album especially,Crosby,Stills & Nash,Ten Years After,Jimmy Hendrix (goin' out to shoot my old lady......),Country Joe and The fish,Rare Earth, the Doors..........
and does anyone really think Dire Straights "Money for Nothing" would get MTV/Airplay if introduced today in the PC environment we live in ? An environment where you CAN talk shit as long as the topic is an accepted one but insult the wrong group and you are run out of town !
The local townies storming Frankensteins Castle !
that is censorship on a grand scale and has been rampant for years even though kept secret and maybe why our music is mostly bland- because it is meant to not offend-unlike the IN YOUR f**kING FACE BITCH music of my youth !
The "go along to get along" of most modern music is why I have little use for it having not much use for punks or pretenders.
To sell out in order to sell records (CDs) tells me it is the dollar held in high esteem over the art and that truly sucks. We need more outlaws with enough balls to stand up and say EXACTLY what they think no matter who does or does not like it and if the mainstream does not play the songs then dammit time for some REAL underground radio stations to take center stage !

REAL underground radio stations? I second that! We have the technology gentlemen - what are we waiting for? ? (an ex-broadcast design senior engineer awaits...) G

What would be involved Graham ? In the "old days" you could set up a small low power transmitter and broadcast locally until or unless someone picked up the signal and ran with it (re-broadcast to the next sub station) and all pretty much untraceable but now we leave a big time trail that goes all the way back to ISP snitches that to save their own asses will give up any customers so in this day of the "RIAA Vs .The People" (customers !!!!!!) royalties need to be dealt with or someone's ass is going to prison ! there may be a wrokaround but I am not computer literate enough to know the way even though this idea does intrigue I learned a lot about REAL COOL by listening to underground stations as I tried to sleep at night in my teens which was impossible because I had to jump out of bed and write down the name of the bands as the "and now for something completely different" music hit my hazed brain It WAS the late sixties/early to mid seventies so "foggy mental breakdown" was more the norm than the exception ;D;D8-) )

Hear me holler down the mountain side I'm near the sky blinking at the evil eye Hear me holler at the city's grind It stole my soul just about lost my mind
Let the loneliness roll in Like the foggy mountain dew Wipe the madness from my eye 'Till my anger slowly dies When the shadow play begins I'll be watching thru the night 'Till I find myself again
Hear me holler cross the sea of light It took my dream and smashed it 'gainst the night Hear me holler at the town below Got nothing left to make me stay and no place left to go
Let the loneliness roll in Like the foggy mountain dew Wipe the madness from my eye 'Till my anger slowly dies When the shadow play begins I'll be watching thru the night 'Till I find myself again

Genesis - Suppers Ready (you seemed to get a lot more "lyric" for your money back then ;D)
Walking across the sitting-room, I turn the television off. Sitting beside you, I look into your eyes. As the sound of motorcars fades in the night time. I swear I saw your face change, it didn't seem quite right... And its hello babe with your guardian eyes so blue. Hey my baby don't you know our love is true.
Coming closer with our eyes, a distance falls around our bodies.
Out in the garden, the moon seems very bright. Six saintly shrouded men move across the lawn slowly, The seventh walks in front with a cross held high in hand... And its hey babe your supper's waiting for you. Hey my baby don't you know our love is true.
I've been so far from here, Far from your warm arms. Its good to feel you again. Its been a long long time. Hasn't it?
I know a farmer who looks after the farm, With water clear, he cares for all his harvest. I know a fireman who looks after the fire.
You, can't you see he's fooled you all. Yes, he's here again, can't you see he's fooled you all. Share his peace, Sign the lease. He's a supersonic scientist, He's the guaranteed eternal sanctuary man. Look, look into my mouth he cries. And all the children lost down many paths, I bet my life, you'll walk inside, Hand in hand, gland in gland, With a spoonful of miracle, He's the guaranteed eternal sanctuary. We will rock you, rock you little snake, We will keep you snug and warm.
Wearing feelings on our faces while our faces took a rest, We walked across the fields to see the children of the West, We saw a host of dark skinned warriors standing still below the ground, Waiting for battle. Fights begun, they've been released. Killing foe for peace... bang, bang, bang. Bang, bang, bang... And they've given me a wonderful potion, 'Cos I cannot contain my emotion. And even though I'm feeling good, Something tells me, I'd better activate my prayer capsule.
Today's a day to celebrate, the foe have met their fate. The order for rejoicing and dancing has come from our warlord.
Wandering in the chaos the battle has left, We climb up the mountain of human flesh, To a plateau of green grass, and green trees full of life. A young figure sits still by a pool, He's been stamped "Human Bacon" by some butchery tool (he is you). Social Security took care of this lad, We watch in reverence, as Narcissus is turned to a flower. A flower?
If you go down to Willow Farm, to look for butterflies, flutterbyes, gutterflies. Open your eyes, its full of surprise, everyone lies, like the fox on the rocks, and the musical box. Oh, there's Mum and Dad, and good and bad, and everyone's happy to be here.
There's Winston Churchill dressed in drag, he used to be a British flag, plastic bag, what a drag. The frog was a prince, the prince was a brick, the brick was an egg, the egg was a bird, Hadn't you heard? Yes we're happy as fish, and gorgeous as geese, and wonderfully clean in the morning.
We've got everything, we're growing everything, We've got some in, We've got some out, We've got some wild things floating about. Everyone, we're changing everyone, You name them all, We've had them here, And the real stars are still to appear. ALL CHANGE!
Feel your body melt; Mum to mud to mad to dad Dad diddley office, Dad diddley office, You're all full of ball.
Dad to dam to dum to mum Mum diddley washing, Mum diddley washing, You're all full of ball. Let me hear your lies, we're living this up to the eyes. Ooee-ooee-ooee-aa Momma I want you now.
And as you listen to my voice To look for hidden doors, tidy floors, more applause. You've been here all the time, Like it or not, like what you got, You're under the soil, Yes deep in the soil. So we'll end with a whistle and end with a bang and all of us fit in our places.
With the guards of Magog, swarming around, The Pied Piper takes his children underground. Dragon's coming out of the sea, Shimmering silver head of wisdom looking at me. He brings down the fire from the skies, You can tell he's doing well by the look in human eyes. Better not compromise. It won't be easy.
666 is no longer alone, He's getting out the marrow in your backbone, And the seven trumpets blowing sweet rock and roll, Gonna blow right down inside your soul. Pythagoras with the looking-glass, reflect the full moon, In blood, he's writing the lyrics of a brand new tune. And its hey babe, with your guardian eyes so blue, Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true, I've been so far from here, Far from your loving arms, Now I'm back again, and baby it's going to work out fine.
Can't you feel our souls ignite Shedding ever-changing colours, in the darkness of the fading night. Like the river joins the ocean, as the germ in a seed grows We have finally been freed to get back home.
There's an angel standing in the sun, and he's crying with a loud voice, "This is the supper of the mighty one". Lord of Lords, King of Kings, Has returned to lead his children home, To take them to the new Jerusalem.
(Grazie a Salvo per questo testo)

I enjoyed the Petyer Gabriel Gensis but not much afterwards. BTW-was listening to the Yes album "Close to the edge" when a teen and being me it was LOUD though it sounded normal volume levels to me ( ;D ) and my mom runs in and yells "TURN DOWN THAT DAMN FUNERAL MUSIC !!!!!"I still laugh at the thought of it and if not for the ass whipping I would have taken likely would have followed it with some "Brain Salad Surgery" just to piss her off even more

I’m the trouble starter, f**kin’ instigator. I’m the fear addicted, danger illustrated. I'll get me coat. Actually, as modern lyrics go, that's pretty "deep" I remember dancing around in a disco (back in the day) to a song that had the lyrics: Push push in the bush Push push in the bush Push push in the bush Push push in the bush you know you like it like that Push push in the bush Push push in the bush Push push in the bush Push push in the bush ;/w I even "bought" the damned extended import version of it! Aaahh Freak out! Le Freak, C'est Chic Freak out! Aaahh Freak out! Le Freak, C'est Chic Freak out! Aaahh Freak out! Le Freak, C'est Chic Freak out! Aaahh Freak out! Le Freak, C'est Chic Freak out! Shake your booty baby!

Yeah, about as deep as a teaspoon. I have to say though, I quite like some of the Prodigy stuff, great for blowing the cobwebs out of those woofers. Perhaps I should have chosen a Kylie song: I should be so lucky lucky, lucky, lucky.... To a certain extent, great lyrics aren't that essential to me. As long as it has a good beat, a great riff or a decent melody, I'm happy. I actually have quite a few recordings of music with the lyrics in languages I don't understand. I have quite a collection of Indian and Arabian music, a couple of albums in Japanese and another in German.
