Ok, so Acoustic-Dimension sell the black gates, but from Floyd's reactions to them being mentioned makes me think if they are the best option. Although the standard series don't seem to be that over priced (apart from the 50v 1000uf).
What do people think of Sanyo OS-CON's and Panasonic ECA's? Although id need to work out where to put them. Apparently the Sanyo's are good for power supply decoupling and then the Pan's for signal path and power supply near the regulators. Does this sound accurate?
Also, do people have many opinions on metal film resistors?

As I wrote in a previous post, I have built a psu. Oversized trafo, BYV27-150 as rectifiers, 4400uF Pana PC as bank with wimas across, LM317 regulator. Anything above that I think would be throwing away money.

How can you say that after fitting the Kiwame's and BG's Ignore me Mayday, just joking I bet that JLH reg would be worth a go, what do you reckon SandyK?

Also, do people have many opinions on metal film resistors? The ECA's are decent caps and safe to use almost anywhere. Be careful with Oscons on the output pins of a reg , such low ESR can make the regs ring like buggery! if you really want to try Oscons its worth sticking a low value resistor in series to add a bit of impedance. Oscons can work great used as local decoupling for some I/C's, normally better for digital though. You can also try the BG's, just be prepared for a good few months of burn in before getting the best out of them, they are not the best caps and over priced IMHO but some folks love them Signal path coupling caps, well use what you like best here, everybody has their own reference so maybe try a few different ones and compare.

" Anything above that I think would be throwing away money. " Perhaps it would be on this particular item. However a Super Regulator, or the JLH PSU add-on that Leo refers, to beats hands down any combination of low bandwidth LM317/LM337 etc and bypass capacitors in preamplifiers and amplifiers. A good super regulator has an extremely low impedance extending to >100KHZ, as well as a considerable lowering of the noise floor. Another result is a more neutral presentation , as most normally used combinations usually cause a degree of artificial warmth in the lower midrange. A little like a typical mosfet amplifier does. Yes I ment in this application. In a better designed, discret application I'd say you had something to win using superregulator. If I were to build a new headphone amp it'd probably be something like the Aikido with 6N1P valves/tubes.

I'm one of those that love the BG's. However My all time favorite caps are Russian militarygrade NOS PIO's, Replaced all of the filmcaps to these in my Audio Innovations 800C preamp, and tossed all PP caps out from the x-overs for my dipoles(DIY) and replaced them with PIO's and replaced wiring with 4x0,46mm highgrade silver twisted and isolated by tedlontubing....man I got new speakres....but that's not only OT it's off-forum LOL!

Ok, so it arrived today. I've been listening to it for a while. It definitely makes a difference. At the moment i only have Senn eH350 and UE super.fi 5 pro's. The Senn's bass seems a little sloppy now, but that might be the amp also. The Senn's also seem to have a LOT more range, the sound seems a LOT fully and well rounded. This is a £30 amp, i wasn't expecting much difference if any until i put the BG's in and replaced the resistors. BTW, the amp is put together quite badly, looks like a 5 yr old soldered the parts on to the board!
The Super.Fi 5 Pro's were also a surprise, they sound TOTALLY different to being directly powered off my iPod with lossless music. For example, im listening now to Stranger Things Have Happened off the new Foo's album which i've been listening too since it was released (obviously not constantly). Grohl's voice sounds a lot more 'natural' (i think thats the word im looking for) and the guitars sound more ... guitar like, less processed.
All in all im pretty pleased, and am very interested to see how it changes from what it is now to when i replace all the bits and bobs inside. It's looking more and more like thats going to be january which is a pain, but the final year of your degree kind of gets the way!
Couple of questions:
Floyd: What did you use to attach the big cap on the left had side strapped to the board? Looks like a cable tie and something else?
Anyone: How do i by-pass the tone control? I want rid of it NOW!
