"I honestly thought 650 euro is very good price for a dac of this caliber, if you add up the amount of work, parts etc they actually are not making a lot on it " Leo You could have bought a brand new MF X-DAC V3 , done mods to take it up to a level that this DAC could never hope to achieve, and still cost less than this offering ! Most people would have to settle for a far less specced TDA1541A. All the really good TDA1541A DACs have been snapped up by savvy collectors, from unsuspecting shopkeepers ! ;D As for that postage quoted, they have to be ******* joking !!! Alex

The modified PCM I have uses the bigger brother to the chip used in the X-dac V3, I've now compared two different upsampling chips and also tried it bypassed, it uses a Tent labs XO with pfm flea regulation, it uses matched Caddock passive I/V resistors with THS4031's for the differential to single gain/buffer section with no coupling caps, regulation to these are Burson discrete shunt regulators, input receiver is a CS8416 with modified PLL set with minimelf resistors and PPS caps, input is fed from a Newava pulse transformer and the socket is a 75R BNC
I will admit this dac sounds good, very good, but IMHO the AYA I just built beats it and this was using a standard TDA1541A for testing, it just sounds more right to my ears, piano and vocal quality is more realistic. if theres anything else I can try with the PCM to improve it further I will but for now the old TDA is still at the top for me, in a few days I'll stick the S2 in. I've tried and heard so many units with big claims, the best of the newer chips to my ears was the PCM1794

leo What I/V stage are you using for it? For the TDA1541 dac? It uses a AD844 as common base with nfb, there is only a couple of chips available that can be implemented in this circuit. AD844 used as the common op-amp I/V is quite poor but using it as the common base turns it into a totally different animal

I havn't played with the TDA1541 much. I have a couple of standard ones, not even A's TDA1541's havn't been made for a very long time, most now are questionable about being fakes(upmarked standard to A's, A's to S1/S2) so i stay away from them.
Have you tried a discrete I/V? Resistor or Pass's D1, or Thurston's I/V

Yes, there is a lot of fakes about, I have a S2 which is original and standard A's I use for testing/ burning in
I've tried pass D1, actually still have a built pcb here, I tried Thorstens passive I/V with ECC88 buffer and I also tried a discrete diamond buffer. AD844 used as a common base is one of my favourites

Leo "Yes, there is a lot of fakes about, I have a S2 which is original and standard A's I use for testing/ burning in" You are in a very eviable position! Supply now is either impossible or fakes. maybe some used............ They have not been made for a very long time. "I've tried pass D1, actually still have a built pcb here, I tried Thorstens passive I/V with ECC88 buffer and I also tried a discrete diamond buffer. AD844 used as a common base is one of my favourites" Well that answers that question use your favourite, What Is there particular about the sound you prefer?

Pagan, What I like best about this dac is the midrange, it sinply sounds more real to my ears than other dacs, piano also has that decay I find missing from a lot of digital sources. The bass from my diy PCM1794 dac is better, its tighter and deeper, the sound is very detailed but midrange sounds a little fake to my ears, I think the upsampling used in this dac also makes things sound more exciting than what they actually are. Both are very good dacs but to me the oldie still has the edge

Hi Leo Yes i have to agree about the TDA1541's. They do have a "musical" sound to them.
But they are now extinct. at least to must of us.
The PCM1794 does not upsample AFAIK.
It processes what you give it.

Sorry for the confusion, I currently have a SRC before the PCM1794 which does the upsampling, its something I'm playing about with at the moment trying both AD1896, SRC4192 and bypassing so no upsampling. If you read further up you can see the specs of my PCM1794 dac
