Sandy, I may soon sell my Arcam DiVA CD73. It is a nice unit but honestly not worth the $750 MSRP price. I was going to get a Philips DVP642 of which I have had one for a year and I love it. The Philips DVP642 sells for as little as $20.00 in Circuit City and IMO it compares well with the likes of NAD C542 (except in HD mode) and the Arcam DiVA CD73.
Anyways, I have read a lot of good things about the Oppo players and I might pick up one. The Oppo 981HD sells for about $229 plus S&H in USA. Are the mods you describe hard to do? Perhaps you can post pictures. Thanks.

Miguel The switchmode mods will void warranty, if for some other reason it needs a service. It's always adviseable with any player to wait for at least a month before modding, to make fairly sure it is going to be reliable. The remote control of volume when using SPDIF out into a DAC is a great idea, and pretty rare. This lets you connect your DAC directly to a power amplifier, which means higher quality with good material. You have to set the o/p to LPCM to do it. It's an undocumented feature.. Very few if any, members would have this player, so I will email some photos. Anyone else can also PM me if they want the pics. Alex

We'll guide you if its needed Miguel;) Theres a lot of decent units going cheap about now and some can be made to sound rather good if your handy with a soldering iron. I wouldn't recommend fiddling with a new unit but if you can pick something up cheap thats well out of its warranty....

Don't suppose you have any tips for the Marantz CD63KI? I've only modded two of these units but theres a stack of stuff that can be done depending how far you want to go. The clock circuitry in these units is lousy! I think they actually added jitter on purpose to give it its signature I found this whilst searching for a service manual, its a very good read and the mods around the clock circuitry is certainly worth doing if your confident www.acoustica.org.uk/t/63/63hacks.html

I've already added an Audiocom clock an dregulated PSU for the clock, and I damped the case to add some mass. I'll have a read and ask advice as needed.

Guys I have some leftover Dynamat (http://www.dynamat.com/) I have though of using it in some of my gear like the X-Can, X-10, CD-Players, etc.
However the metal film facing the components worries me (add more noise?). Also its temperature range (http://www.dynamat.com/technical_specs_dynamat_original.html) worries me. What do you think?
Thanks.

I bought some sound deadening material from ebay ... it's heavy, it's not suffered in any of my x-can components, and it definately helped.
Think it cost about 5 quid ... and two sheets did 4 x-components with plenty left.

Hi Sandyk!
The Oppo model I have is a 970HD, and not a 971H as I wrote. Will your suggestions still be the same?

arirug email sent.
For the benefit of anybody else interested in trying the Oppo players as a transport, I have attached the results of a acouple of simple tests done a few days ago :
This morning Geoff and I did a comparison with >test disc between Geoff's Arcam Alpha 5 , Arcam DV88 and >the modded Oppo , into the X-DAC. .Class A preamp and PA. >resolution is such, that we were readily able to class >the Alpha5 as relatively poor, DV88 as much better, Oppo >as WAY better. (within 30 seconds or so on each) > Alex
BTW, the 2 tested Arcams are now on ebay (or soon will be)

Cliffy I personally don't know anything more about that gear than what I saw with Google, but if you can post some high resolution photos, you are bound to get a few suggestions. SandyK

I do not know if I have posted this elsewhere here but the Philips DVP642 which I purchased for $52 delivered from Circuit City is an amazing player. The best part is that Circuit City had a sale in September and was selling them for $19.99 a coworker bought one, I should have bought a second one but ...
Anyways if you need a transport or an inexpensive unit this one is hard to beat.

FLAC and MP3 Files on PC ==> Chaintech AV710 ==> Glass Toslink Cable ==> Constantine+ USB NOS DAC (TDA1545) ==> Meier Corda HA-2 MKII SE Amp ==> whatever headphone I'm in the mood to listen to.
I also have a TEAC 2610 CD Changer that I have hooked up to the Constantine+ via Digital Coax.

my primary source now is a Focusrite SaffirePro 8 10 chan microphone preamp/ADC/DAC used for playing back the live recordings that I make. I generally use 2 Schoeps cardioid mics in an ORTF setup and then a couple of suitable mics for the reed and percussion sections.
What does not get enough use is my turntable which is a Kenwood direct drive motor mounted in a 30KG marble plinth with isolating feet. The tonearm is an old Dual with an antiresonant counterweight and a DIY magnetic antiskating arrangement. I am using a luxman high output MC cartridge with a van den Hul stylus. That feeds an ortofon T30 transformer. The phono preamp is a wide band op amp/mosfet design (in a crummy little metal box) that I picked up in Japan at the akihabara.

Shall I chime in as well? I've got a couple of tunrtables (Braun PS-550, Dual CS455-1M, Dual CS505-4, Grundig PS-3000 (= rebadged Philips AF-777), Philips AF-677, Technics SL-QD33, Thorens TD280MkII) and a few cdps (Marantz CD6000OSE (x2), Philips CD480, Pioneer PD-S601). Oh, and two DVD-V/A players (Panasonic DVD-S75 (Euro model, x2)). No dedicated tuners, but some receivers (BASF 8440, Yamaha RX-330; a BASF 8450 and a neat, old JVC VR-5505L should soon arrive here...). I almost never listen to radio stations, though - the receivers are more "just for fun" and for their integrated amp functions. Especially the BASFs, which are cool, extra wide (~ 58 cm), black Quadro monsters (some more info on and pics of BASF's line-up in 1978 here: wegavision.pytalhost.com/basf78/). Mhmmm, vintage gear - yummy... Greetings from Munich! Manfred / lini edit: typo extermination

Yo, Rickmonster! Well, what shall I say: I've discovered ebay for me - bad for the collectitis, but good for the collection. So much nice vintage gear there for cheap... It's really hard to stop oneself. But at least I'm sensible enough not to amass cassette and open reel tape decks. Although some sure are tempting... argh, argh, argh... Maybe there are some pills against it... Greetings from Munich! Manfred / lini

yeah, arsenic Other than that ? Doomed man ! Once you get your mitts on a semi-pro level recorder it is tough to be without one even with all the aggravation involved keeping the sucker fed with "blanks" and the bias settings, tweaking the tape head eq,tape head cleaning, tape head alignment, replacing the damn heads when they wear out THEN adjusting everything all over again............ Did i say it was FUN ?
