I really hate this time of year in general and December and January in particular.
It's not just the commercial frenzy and false bonhomie that exemplifies Christmas or indeed, January's credit card bills and tax returns that seem to turn me into the perennial grumpy (old) man at this time of year.
Apparently the signs and symptoms of SAD include:
Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed Having low energy / tiredness Having problems with sleeping Experiencing changes in your appetite or weight Feeling sluggish or agitated Having difficulty concentrating Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty Oversleeping Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates Weight gain
Having frequent thoughts of death or suicide!!?
Causes
The specific cause of seasonal remains unknown. Some factors that may come into play include:
Your biological clock (circadian rhythm). The reduced level of sunlight in fall and winter may disrupt your body's internal clock and lead to feelings of depression.
Serotonin levels. Reduced sunlight can cause a drop in serotonin, a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) that affects mood and may trigger depression.
Melatonin levels. The change in season can disrupt the balance of the body's level of melatonin, which plays a role in sleep patterns and mood.
Does this describe you and what do you do about it?
Do you strip naked under a sun lamp and crank up the volume?
Buy a fancy lamp
Or wallow in your misery?

I do have some symptomes and I think it's the light deficiency for me that does the most damage. I like the cold wheather (low temperatures and snow!) but I'm more inside the house and I experience less energy for hobbies as well. This morning I sat a hour outside in the sun. This is good for you biological clock and lets one sleep better at night (I hope).
What helps for me is just go and do something I like. Something like listening to music, watch a good movie of some interesting youtube video's, read a good and/or interesting book, stargazing with my telescopes etc. After a while I feel energy flowing and gaining.

Well.... I wouldn't actually cut my throat but you know what I mean Winter is bad enough but add all those damned people talking about "Brexit" into the mix and it suddenly gets a lot worse...... they want to tell Europe to eff off and spend the billions on roads, NHS and infrastructure. It's pot hole city in the UK and they're waffling on about driverless cars? ffs, the country is being run by circus clowns!

As for the SAD lamp...... well, that was a waste of £70. It reminds me of sitting in a Dentist's chair.... very clinical, sterile light, a total waste of £70

That's £70 saved thank you. I have installed so called balanced tubes in my office lights but as they don't seem to make a differnce I was contemplating the SAD Lamp.

So following the Spring Equinox, I suppose the SAD Season should be over? But I am still a miserable sod...but if I can't get a decent brew maybe there is some excuse!

There is a lot of sun here and for the coming days. I’m already in shorts.
