Dale,
I have the AKG K712 which I like for its reasonable neutral sound but it can sound a bit "harsh" on some recordings. It also seems to lack some excitement. (At my age I could really do with that). I have the Grado 325e's which sound weird whatever I do with them. I have Senn HD600's which are OKish but do have an even worse problem with some recordings regarding harshness than the AKG's. The AKG's still sound (to me) more natural than the Senns. I also have some Beyer DT880 pro which are similar to the Senns.
I'd like to consider another pair of headphones with a tad more excitement (involvement) than the AKG but cannot stretch to the Focal Elear's that you have reviewed and put at the head of your list. I see you like the B&O H6 too, would that be a good contender? I am using a X-Can v2 amp heavily modded by Mike with some of his really decent valves (as we call them in the UK) ;-) I also have Mike's original Panda which I sometimes use.
Can you recommend anything Dale? ... views form anyone else will also be of interest.

Well, maybe I am overdoing the excitement factor bit. "Better Sound" would be more than acceptable I don't think the K553's are still available though (here in the UK at least). Are the K550 Mk2's any good (?) as I see they are a similar design and easily available. The HD800's are a bit out of my price range, and I'm not sure if they are still around

Beyer 'phones may suit your ears Chris..... the DT990 Pro / 250ohm has real nice synergy with the V2 and the bass extension will make your toe nails curl. Not at all harsh and a very enjoyable tone to them....... a seriously good price too / built like a tank / comfortable / Made In Germany..... what more can I say? www.amazon.co.uk/Beyerdynamic-DT990-PRO-Headphones-250/dp/B0011UB9CQ

They can sound pretty harsh and I've read that the DT990 Pro has even more treble than the 880's so I wonder. Does the higher impedance change the balance of sound that much and are the 990 250 ohm going to sound better than my 880 low impedance. The price looks good though I must say. I tried my Senn HD600's last night after some time away from them and they are not the same as I remember them. The highs are quite tame with no sign of harshness at all. In fact by comparison with the AKG's the treble is quite veiled. Maybe the new cable I bought for them has finally reached its peak. I wonder now about the AKG K550 Mk2 or the Beyer 990 Pro.

I got the AKG K550 Mk2 a little while back on fleabay for about 50 quid and I thought that was a pretty sweet deal. They have good seperation, decent bass and aren't at all shrill to my ears. Comfort is my only issue with them though. They aren't hugely padded across the headband and you really need a big head for them, but squeezing the headband from time to time helps. As a sealed kick-about hp, they're great overall if you get them for the right price I also tried my Senn HD600s yesterday after a long time with the thought that if I can find 3 songs where they come definitely last to Audeze LCD-2s I'd put them up on ebay. The bass can be a bit one-notey, somewhat grainy (nevermind veiled) but the mid-range and treble is still pretty good. They're still a good horses for courses hp

I bought my girlfriend a pair of AKG K550mk2 for xmas to listen to her ipod/ipad, they are only 32ohm so will work better with portable devices She likes the sound of them and they dont sound bright to me (burn them in for 3 weeks constantly) I still have the neco v2 amp that i will have to try them with, plus the hifi too If you are getting a bright sound it may be the headphones showing up the source/media The 600 ohm bayer dt880 might be up your street, but the high Z might make your amp struggle to provide voltage See if you can find a vintage sansui au101 int amp, i bought one years ago and re capped it plus swapped the 2 resistors on the headphone jack to 120 ohm ones This plays my akgk240 sextetts no problem, even the akg 240 DF when i had them Vintage stax headphones with the energiser are great for SQ but people think they lack bass/exitement when the truth is they are telling it like it is I got a pair of stax sr5 gold (white cups) that were made around 1985 few years ago and replaced the earpads, i plug the energiser in to the speaker teminals in the amp and let them charge up for five minutes with a couple of songs, non fatiguing and nice sound Deffo the best headphones to me Paddy

Chris, The Fostex T50RP are well worth a punt, especially if you perform the plasticine tweaks: rockgrotto.proboards.com/thread/8832/fostex-t50rp?page=11They were superb after the plasticine tweaks but I didn't really take to them so they ended up out in the workshop doing 10 minutes a day listening to matched valves to ensure they "sounded" good after being matched on the analyser..... they were out there for two YEARS! They are now back indoors because a strange thing happened..... they started to sound better and better out in the workshop (I mean BETTER and BETTER) and, at first, I put this down to the different batches of valves sounding better and better...... nope. The T50RP diaphragms obviously took a fair while to bed in but now they are fully broken in..... wow! The best pair of headphones I have ever heard / period. The plasticine tweaks took a decent sounding pair of 'phones to a VERY good sounding pair of headphones but the break in period has taken them to a magical / utterly eargasmic pair of headphones. I should have realised that at the time..... I was (am) always a great believer that headphones require a period of time / usage to "form", just the same as it takes a pair of new shoes to bed into a foot. Where there is movement in a material there will always be a relaxing of the material..... everything has to find its' working state. Drivers, straight out of the factory, are tight and not used to stresses and strains..... it takes a period of time for them to relax into their actual working parameters. 2 years for the T50RP but only 120 hours if I had thrashed them on a loop (high volume, without clipping, Album on loop). My two year ten minute (some days) break in / bed in (at MOST) equates to 365 x 2 = 730 x 10 minutes = 7,300 minutes so: 7,300 minutes divided by 60 = 121.66 hours or 121.66hrs / 24hrs = 5 days on loop at a loudish level without clipping. I'll send them over to you Chris, as they are, and you can have a good listen..... can't do fairer that, Have a GOOD listen and take your time. I don't want to sell them, I have fitted a 1 metre cord and done the sheep's wool / plasticine to suit my own personal requirements but I'd like you to have a listen. Let's just say..... they totally crap on the big boys from a great height PM or email me your address Chris, I'll pop them in the post. Best regards, Mike.
