Trust me on this one Russ Andrews is a ................ Make your own sentence up / all of them will be correct. Mike. Odd how extra text was added to my link, yet it works for me. The original link was in an email and I could see it had extra text to track clickable links so I removed it and ended up with the very same link you used. Then adding it here caused extra text to be added. Weird! Anyway, back to the point... Russ Andrews is person who appears to often sell snake oil at vast amounts of moolah. I bet yours was ruder.

I recently auditioned the Rupert Neve RNHP, which prompted me to sell my Graham Slee Solo Ultra Linear and buy the Neve. I won't bother with a description of the sound as I'm probably biased and anyone in the market for a new amp will want to audition one with their own gear. Needless to say, I'm very happy with the sound and build quality. I got in before the Brexit price rises and paid £429. Mike, these amps are not "badge engineered in China", they are in fact made in the USA.

Hi, I have the Graham Slee Solo Ultra Linear but curious about the sound difference to prompt you to sell & replace w/ a Rupert Neve RNHP. My cans are Sennheiser HD800, HiFiMan HE-500, AKG's Q701 & K702.
Thanks,
Wayne

I suggest you audition one and let your ears decide. Edit: Tested using High res. files stored on QNAP HS 251+ running JRiver > Mutec MC-3+ USB > Devialet 440 Pro via AES/EBU. RNHP driven by pre-outs from Devialet. Alex.

Hi Alex, My apologies, I jumped in feet first without thinking and shouldn't have said it was badge engineered in China! The sad thing is, these days, that they ALL look the bloody same but the Rupert doesn't.... I should have done a bit more research before stupidly jumping in with my "badge engineered in China" incorrect remark. It would be nice to see what's going on under the bonnet, any chance of popping the hood? It should be a simple matter of undoing the two top screws either side of the enclosure and lifting the hood. It would be interesting to have a look and, who knows, may be the start of a Rupert Neve headphone amp discovery type of journey Best regards, Mike.

Hi Mike, I'm sure a lot of the amps on the market are MIC, and I quite like the fact that the Neve isn't. However, the power supply is most definitely MIC. It's a very cheap looking wall wart. I asked the folks at Neve whether the unit might benefit from a decent linear PSU, but they told me that there were no gains to be had. Do you agree with this? I can't help thinking that it would lead to an improvement in SQ. That being the case, can you recommend an after market 24V linear PSU that won't break the bank? I'll whip the top off later today and take some shots. Here's a link for U.K. buyers: www.studiocare.com/rupert-neve-designs-rnhp-headphone-amplifier.html?___store=default&utm_source=GoogleShopping&gclid=CLuQucWtt9ACFZUW0wodt4UGOAI must say that it's nice to be back in The Grotto once again! Best regards, Alex. Edit: photo added

The audio section looks to be NE5532's for the line in, balanced and gainstages driving a TPA6120 current feedback amplifier . Personal experience putting effort into PSU's always benefits SQ. IC's PSRR vary from design to design so gains in SQ will also vary depending on the filtering etc

Totally agree with Leo regarding a linear / regulated PSU, it will most definitely reap a sonic reward. Nicely put together amp Alex but hard to see what's what as most of the components are SMD, jeez Leo you must have really good eyesight.... have I got this right? Three outputs so 6 x NE5532, 2 per output? The 4700uF / 25V caps are definitely Nichicon FW series and the pot is definitely an RK27 (possibly 50K). Nicely laid out but maybe better with 35V caps, especially if using raw DC..... 25V are a bit close to the bone IMO.

Obviously we can't be 100% sure without close inspection but that looks right ^^^ TPA6120 on the output of the 5532's driving the loads , looks to be quad analogue IC's for the switching.

BTW I once built a simple amp a few years ago , just line input no balanced, no switching etc with a dual opamp into TPA6120 .

It's pretty much an industry standard (Pro use) type design Leo..... nothing special, business as usual....... I DO like the utilisation of a quality potentiometer though. What really pisses me off are those 25V capacitors...... that's a built in time bomb for sure Especially with an "unregulated" raw DC supply.

looks to be single rail input so may use voltage splitter

Thanks for the input, guys, although the descriptions of the circuit go right over my head, I'm afraid. So, any idea where I could pick up a decent 24V PS for not too much dosh?

Thanks for your honesty, Mike. I've done as you suggested and bought one. Hopefully it'll be here in time for Christmas! I'll let you know if it makes any difference to SQ. You mentioned in a previous post that the caps on the amp are on the small side. Should I replace these? If so, where can I lay my hands on a couple? Will it have an effect on SQ? Kind regards, Alex.

No, not yet. Ordered it on the 22nd Nov. so it should be here soon. So what about these caps? What would be the advantage of fitting larger ones? Is it so that it doesn't run out of grunt?
Cheers,
Alex.
