It was blowing a fierce gale today (08th August) and the high was 12C (53F). I popped past Thurso beach to watch the waves (as one does!) and this geezer gets out of a VW camper van and makes his way onto the beach fully clothed (see photo) the camper van had a German number plate so I assume he was German.
Well, sod me, I couldn't believe my eyes..... this bloke stripped down to his shorts and made his way into the sea! Believe me folks, that water would be closer to bloody cold than "cold". I managed to withstand (stand in the gale) and took a short clip of him going into the sea..... it was literally a gale that would blow you over so excuse the video quality (Sony Z5 compact phone). This guy not only "paddled" into the water, he ended up diving into a wave and spent about 10 minutes swimming!!!!
You probably think I'm exaggerating about the sea temperature but I'm not...... they reckon a fisherman will survive for maybe 10 minutes in these waters before suffering from hypothermia..... that was one hard bastard and hats off to the Germans
Pretty much a "f**k the weather, I'm on holiday and I am going to swim" type of attitude.... either that or he was committing suicide, I didn't actually "see" him reach dry land, I had to get round to the post office to drop off a few parcels
Not something you usually see on any beach up here..... they are usually surfers with wetsuits on, to see somebody go semi naked is quite unusual
I did it a couple of years ago in NOVEMBER but it wan't intentional...... I was fully clothed, taking a video of HUGE 40 foot waves (standing on a rock) when, all of a sudden, I found myself shoulder height in freezing cold water....... the waves were so intense that the water had come up behind me and took me by surprise....... the final part of the video you can hear me exclaim "shit!" (or some such expletive) and all goes dead.
I was absolutely DRENCHED and had to be stripped naked / towel dried by my friend's wife (who lived about 900 yards away)...... I had LITERALLY turned BLUE I was so cold....... to this day I'll never forget that, I thought I was a gonner in the water and when I got onto dry land it was even worse...... fortunately, Sue Thompson was at home...... if it wasn't for her towel intervention I would be dead.
Quite funny really, looking back on it, my MAIN priority was saving the camera from drowning......... great footage but you would have had to be there to appreciate the near death experience:
I hate watching this:
