Hello Everybody, I recently purchased the Altronics DAC (2009 version, K5332) kit as my first project (this one www.altronics.com.au/p/k5332-stereo-digital-to-analog-converter-kit/) and would like to combine it with the SC headphone amplifier (2005 version, K5503, www.altronics.com.au/p/k5503-studio-series-pre-amp-headphone-amplifier-kit/). However I am a bit of a newbie! The transformer on the DAC kit gives out +-15VAC to the power supply board, which outputs both 0,+5V to power the input board and +15V, 0V,-15V to power the DAC board. My guess is that this is the same power board used to power the SC Headphone Amp as well? As the output of the DAC board is stereo RCA, my guess is that I can somehow split the audio output and connect it to some sort of volume knob, then to the input of the Headphone Amp board which has a heaphone out. Is this correct? If so, I am wondering if I can use the same power supply and transformer to power both the DAC board as well as the headphone amplifier? Would there be enough power to power both the headphones and the RCA out at the same time? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

You will need 2 separate PSU PCBs and a separate 15-0-15V 20 or 30VA transformer to power the Headphone Amplifier. The one supplied with your DAC is a 15-0-15V 30VA type, which isn't adequate to power both, and even if you used a larger transformer it would degrade the performance of the DAC if used in the same case. If you search through the DIY area of the forum, you will find long threads about how to markedly improve the performance of both the Headphone amplifier and the S.C. DAC. The Headphone amplifier can have a dual 50Kohm logarithmic taper potentiometer connected directly at the input to the headphone amplifier. You will also see how we used the Headphone Amplifier PCB, along with the same PSU PCB as in the DAC, as a stand alone Headphone amplifier in a plastic case.

Hi Sandyk,
Thanks very much for the reply and your contribution to improvements the SC kits. Seems I am better off building the headphone amp in a separate enclosure/kit, rather than trying to squeeze it into the DAC kit.
I look forward to improving on the stock kits once I first build the set of SC pre-amp/headphone/amp(s) and they are all up and running!
Cheers

Cheers Hi Both Chris and myself can guide you through the safety aspects of mains wiring , tweaks etc. if you need assistance. Some of my original photos are no longer showing up, but we can provide details which are hard to put together from such a long thread. BTW, > 300 of this modified HA were constructed by Rock Grotto members. Attached is a photo of the one I sent to a friend in Miami, when at the testing stage. Regards Alex
