I've paid for a Nobsound MS10 and it should be arriving at my home soon, at £60 brand new I couldn't resist. Have I dropped a clangour, does anyone insist I change the valves?

A lot of "bodywork" for the money but you haven't strictly bought a valve amplifier.... you have bought a solid state amplifier with valves that glow. It may well sound ok but it certainly won't sound "out there" given that it is a very basic little solid state amp housed inside a large enclosure..... much like a Honda 50cc moped engine fitted into the engine bay of a Bentley. Read more here: members.iinet.net.au/~cool386/jaycar/jaycar.htmlI wouldn't bother changing the valves, you'll just end up wasting money. Mike.

It arrived today and I hooked it up to a pair of Linton 2's, the feed was from a Sony TC209. There must be something wrong with my hearing, because it sounds fantastic to me!! That is to say fabulous considering the price, they are normally well over £100, so I think I got a bargain. If I'm totally wrong about it, it just goes to show that I have inferior hearing to some of the geezers on here.

I was given to understand that the pre was valve and the power solid state, is this not the case?

Into a pair of Sony S86e fed with lawnmower 6 amp cable it sounds even better. The orange colour of the cable must be an important factor ha ha ha. Seriously though, it does work well, gives me plenty of pleasure. Could it be that some of Hi-Fi has an element of kiddums?

If nothing else, it could be turned into a real valve amplifier. There seems to be space for 5-10W output transformers. Lowest parts count would be a single ended amp regardless if it is in pentode or triode mode. Google RH86 if you are interested.
