Hello, I just bought a second hand arcam power amplifier and i was on the lookout for a preamplifier to match it. The Power amplifier came with a preamplifier which i notice does not need mains to power it and it sounds great. I was just wondering that if i bought the proper arcam preamplifier would the sound be better or worse. Why do i need electric for it when this unit is doing it with a much simpler design that uses just the volume pot and no circuitry so surely that should be better for the signal or am i missing out on something. Thanks

Very much two schools of thought on this. There are advantages for each of the passive or powered designs over each other. Some folk are passionate about this and will never accept the opposite camp. There is great great functional difference between the two, the powered variety offering integrated phono stages, tape loops, tone controls etc. If you are happy with the one you have, both sonically and functionally, then stay with it. I seriously doubt a cheap powered pre-amp will bring anything more to your enjoyment unless it is a very special one.
Which pre do you have?
