Good evening
I have just dug out my HD580's and started to use them again after 5 years only to find that at medium volume or so I am getting distortion / crackling in one side. It is not a cable problem and it is not an amplifier problem.
Is this indicative of a capsule failure or is there somthing else I can look at?
Many thanks.

Try removing the pads and check that there's not a hair making contact with the driver

Just to be sure, pull the cables from the earcups, wipe clean and push back in.

check the diaphragm whether it is crumpled or not. This happened to my first hd580s before. What you do is blow from the back of the cups. Blow it hard and quick and it will re inflate. Voila, distortion gone

Have your needs changed then? When my 580s were turned into monos I replaced them with 600s. Still have those and use them. For closed I have the AKG K550 which is the best closed back I have ever heard BUT they are a very different flavour to the Sennys and are very pad-to-head-seal sensitive, some people just cannot get a decent seal (it' has quite large earcups) which makes them sound somewhat naff.

Hi CJ,despite my assurances to the contrary, the problem turned out to be a clipping amp - defective psu.
However I need (ha Ha) a new set of phones with a degree of isolation. The 580's are mainly used for general listening, with sr225's for rock etc.
I liked the idea of hd 25's but they seem silly money.
I have a set of Beyerdynamic 990's but they are 600 ohm and I don't have an amp to drive them.
I have a larege head so I will have a look for the AKG K550's thank you.
