Salutations from the frozen tundra formally known as Detroit...minus 5 degrees F. tonite...maybe a high of 0 degrees F. on Sunday.
So, staying warm and listening to my Grado SR-125's with a "new to me" style of ear cup pad...the concave ones usually seen on the SR-225 thru the RS models. I have to say I am altogether enjoying anew the music emanating from these slightly "modified" Grado's. Seems the sometimes harsh mid frequencies have been given a reprieve from the aggravation quotient now. I seem to be hearing a more coherent top to bottom sound and am experiencing more effects way wide of the center image...a wider soundstage, if you will.
I'd be interested to hear of anyone that has added these "cups" to their Grado cans that came originally with "on ear" pads. Have the concave cups made a difference to others, as well?

Sorry to be a bit off topic but I've no experience here with Grado cup style pads. But I'd like to say that it's remarkable how much difference swapping pads around with Grados makes. My original Grado SR60 pads disintegrated years ago. So I'm currently using some cheap pads bought (in UK) at Maplins. They are a good pad but no longer available and these too will be useless in time. With that in mind I got a pack of budget pads from China. The Maplin pads are the thinner and softer; the Chinese ones are thicker and with a firmer texture.
The difference between the two is obvious and maninly the difference is at the bass end. One can effectively tune the strength of bass to suit one's own taste as the thicker the pads, and therefore how much further away from your ears the drivers are then the less strong the bass is. With my SR60s and SR80s I effectively have 4 different headphones if I swap the pads around. I'm currently enjoying the 80s with the thinner pads. Nice blend of charcteristics. The 60s suit the thicker pads however.
Before I had a choice of pads I thought all the chat about pads to be nonsense. Whoops.

Wow, great! Seems as though there are many earpad choices for Grado's. The ones I chose are named as "L" type. I visited TTVJ site and have been informed! Thanks Bullpup....j

Hi Derek...I guess I meant to ask in my opening comments to this thread if there are any "other" ear pads for Grado's budget models that the group have used to good effect...rather than just the ones I added onto my set. In fact I wasn't aware of the many that are out there! Thanks I guess I'm really happy with the sound coming out of these SR-125's as it was 3 o'clock in the morning when I realized I was yawning a bit more than usual while jamming with 'em on my head. This set-up is the AQ Dragonfly playing my usual Psybient/Downtempo internet radio stations thru Winamp and the MF X-Cans v.1 (Mike's kit added plus) and the AR TDS-202 sound enhancer twixt DAC and amp. This headphone set really comes alive with the TDS-202 in situ...with the new pads added into the mix...and makes the Grado's really listenable...I mean 8 hours straight with Grado's on my head? Yep, no prob...at all. Lots of attack and deep, deep natural bass with midrange expression and sweet highs...Grado??? Yep, as I hear it. As a matter of fact I'm back on 'em this morning...couldn't wait to get back to this sound...which is the best one can say about a piece of kit...Ya just can't wait to hear some more! Later...j

I have tried both the smaller SR80 pads and the larger pads on my SR225's and yes there is a noticeable difference to the sound. Still not sure I like the Grado signature sound though, it appears to work well with rock and guitar led music but less with electronic.
Considering selling mine for the next pair that comes along.....

Hi Andy...I am hooked on Psybient/Downtempo...on divbyzero.de streaming radio for one...found another clearing house like Shoutcast last nite.."radio forest". But, I can agree somewhat with your comment on the Grado sound for electronica. With the upgraded Musical Fidelity X-Cans v.1 with Amperex PCC88 tubes in it, the sound is more detailed and just a tad light in the deep bass. But adding that TDS-202 brings a more authoritative bass. Then again with the "wrong" song, can brighten the highs a bit. I put on my AKG-702's hooked up to the little Qinpu A-3 integrated amp and headphone amp late last night, and WOW!, the pounding really hit hard while the ambient effects were deeper and more involved in the mix...so, keeping a lot of the detail the Grado's bring. The Qinpu doesn't like the TDS-202's +3db boosting at all, and balks at receiving an overly hyped input source. But, within it's happy parameters, it's a hard hitting little amp for the AKG's, that compare as "different" to the Grado sound.
I guess though, I like the "new" sound of my Grado 125's with the concave ear pads well enough to switch to them for their unique sound...I like the detailed ambience I get with 'em. But, point taken...on some material, anyway.

I just ordered the PS1000e - I hope I get a source for genuine replacement pads, since the standard foamy things don't last a long time.

"I used to die right along with Ufer when Bo's big, bad, Wolverine's couldn't come up with the play...He was one of THEE most unique sports announcers in the whole wide world"...said thru my tears of screaming joy when the game went Bo's way and utter disastrous dismay when they didn't;. He had a unique signoff that I wish I had a recording of - "We'll see you next time, which will be the best time". And then, one interview I would dearly, dearly love to have on video, for the outrageous humor, is Frank Deford's interview of Don King. That one had me falling off of my chair.

And then, one interview I would dearly, dearly love to have on video, for the outrageous humor, is Frank Deford's interview of Don King. That one had me falling off of my chair. At this time of year I'm always reminded of the Canadian (about a mile away from Big "D") broadcast on Saturday nights of "Hockey Night in Canada", especially the ones from the "Forum" in Mon-ree-all. All those wonderful French-Canadian names flying around the ice, my 8 year old eyes wide as saucers in wonderment...Show is still on...but, not the same mystique anymore. But then also, I was always a Red Wing's fan...good times and bad. I lived about a mile from the "Old Barn"...Olympia Stadium. We High Schooler's would get "standing room only" tickets and sit on the press box stairs, almost 3 flights up. But, with the design of that stadium...really steep seating...we could still see the near boards from way up there, way down there in front of us. Lots of memories there. So, Ohio State Buckeyes and Meeeeeeshigan Wolverines....last game of every Big Ten season. And it, the game, was always everything we'd hoped it would be. A rivaly for all time. Have you heard Billy Crystal's imitation of Phil Rizzuto, former Yankee SS and a broadcaster with a real character's voice. Crystal loved the guy's delivery, you could tell. "Holy Cowwww" Still gets me every time I hear it.....j

I should get a DVD of Billy Crystal's voices. He's a genius. Only a couple times anyone stole his scene -- Rob Reiner's mom with "I'll have what she's having", and Jack Palance in the original city slickers.

Billy Crystal...ha! www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGxL5AFzzMYGreat video of Jack Palance...shouda received a standing "O" for that one hander! One of my all time fav and amazing impressions was on Mystery Science Theater 3000...if you can believe it. I thought I'd choke on my laughter: Crow T. Robot done up and sounding like Jack Elam....the scariest looking B Western movie villain ever! Crow absolutely did the deal on him. I'm laughing now as I write this. Totally an immaculate impression. If anyone remembers/knows what movie MST 3000 was showing that episode of Crow's "Jack Elam" bit, please add it to this thread. j
