Yep, changed my car again and on Monday collected my latest MINI Cooper. It's a blast. Has the latest 3 cylinder BMW engine and drives like a dream. At last the basic Cooper, as opposed to the Cooper S, has a decent amount of power. This new Cooper offers 136 horses, 230 torques and 0-60 in 7.5s. It's almost as powerful as the 'original' 2001 Cooper S which had 161, 210 and 7.0 respectively. The new Cooper will feel a bit better, in fact, due to the torque which is fully available between 1500 & 4000 revs. Quite amazing. Hope it doesn't appear like showing off but I'm dead chuffed with it Thank you Santa, Derek

Aha, there it is! Very nice.
I'm hopelessly overdue a new car as our 12 year old is almost totally shagged with 230,000km on the clock but we have other priorities at the mo.

Do they do an estate version Derek? I'm looking for something sporty but with adequate room to carry my chesnuts in.

My little man has now done 98,000 miles and runs like new so no idea when I'll be replacing it, I service it regularly (oil change every 3,000 miles) and hope I'll get 250,000 miles out of it.

Yes, mike it goes well. But it's not stupidly powerful. Just enough to have a little fun with (when safe to do so ;-) )

And now for something completely different. After 4 MINIs we decided to try something else. Here's me on the Black Isle with Cromarty Firth in the backgroud. We made the trip last October to visit my brother who hasn't been at all well. The car is so great to drive I did the return journey back to Oswestry in one hit; just a couple of coffee stops needed. I had a Honda Civic (CRX-HF) 5-speed stick (petrol only, no hybrid) that got 62 mpg on the highway, up to 70 mpg if I kept the speed at 55 mph or under, and it got in the high 40's mpg around town. And it passed California smog 5 times better than required. As great as it was, I would not drive it OR the high-powered mini-cars today, because the road bullies in the U.S. are so bad in most cities, it would be suicide.

Hope your brother is on the mend Derek.

BTW, I still have my trusty Micra K12 rockgrotto.proboards.com/thread/8112/nissan-micra-sx-k12-engine It now has 109,764 miles on the clock and still drives like new. AFAIAC it's crazy for me to buy another car until it becomes absolutely necessary........ I go into town (a 24 mile round trip) 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year and the Micra has been absolutely BULLET PROOF! More than "fast" enough for me, I average about 70MPH, and damned spritely when overtaking (which is quite rare as there are hardly any cars on the road when I go into town) to get rid of it would be a very foolish thing to do. The roads up here, in the winter, are covered in salt so the car's underside is subjected to a fresh lashing of rust inducing saline every time it comes in contact with the road so my way of thinking is to keep the car well maintained and do my very best to get the best possible lifespan out of it. I drop the oil and filter every 3,000 miles and change the plugs every 5,000 miles..... I also keep an eye on all the grounding points and once every year I scrub them with 600 grade wet / dry paper and then seal them with servisol silicone grease. It's f**kin' tough on a car up here so grease and oil are your friend I would LOVE a sporty number Derek BUT, if I bought one, it would probably spend most of its time in the garage being protected from the elements! If I lived where Dale lives (a warm climate) I'd have a two seater convertible, no doubt about that, but a two seater convertible in Caithness? erm.... all show, no go for 45 weeks of the year. Everybody I know keeps telling me that I don't "look the part" in the Micra but that little Micra is 100% reliable (touchwood) and gets me from A to B and that's all that matters in my book....... It cost me just under £2,000 over 5 years ago and hasn't missed a beat, the biggest maintenance cost being tyres and oil, I would be really daft to ditch it, go into the deal den and come out with something that looks different but does the same job (ie: get me from A to B) with a bank balance £30K lighter on the south side. I was TERRIBLE in my youth, everything had to be pristine and "new" but as I have grown older I don't mind being the custodian of a secondhand "warts and all" car...... it's actually good fun! If it was costing me a small fortune in repair bills then I'd definitely buy a nearly new one but it isn't (touchwood)! The other good bit about taking one car to the end of its natural lifespan is the money you have available to spend on a new car Steve (that's what I call the Micra / and yes, I talk to him) set me back £1,900 over 5 years ago. 5 years of damned good service later all he has asked for is petrol, tyres, oil, the occasional wash and a new camshaft position sensor. (touchwood!!!!!!) Quite a large amount set aside in the "new car" piggybank but I, seriously, hope I don't have to break into it anytime soon...... I love Steve. Mike.

BTW.... a funny story..... Two years ago there was a "serious" storm up here which took down 4 pine trees in the back garden. The geezer with the chainsaw arrived (to saw the fallen trees into logs) and said "can you get the owner of that Micra to move his car?" I replied "he's up cleaning a chimney right now" and I swear this is the truth................ He said "f**kin' Micra drivers, that's all they're fit for" I opened the garage door and reversed Steve in..... came out and declared "they are also good at reversing into garages"

After many years of having kids, not managing our funds well, crap salaries, we are now retired, settled and can afford a few luxuries. As long as these treats are planned for and accounted for that is. Our TT is a fab privilege, as is my hi-fi gear. And our finances all managed through my master accounts spreadsheet which holds all planned income and expenditure up until 2020! Even overspends are allowed for.
I do understand the value for money car proposition. A while back, when we had need for a second car to ensure my wife could get to work when I was away from home with work, we bought a nearly new Fiat Punto. 60 bhp, 0-60 in about two hours :-) But comfortable, very spacious, rust free, reliable enough. Nippy enough on roundabouts when you need to pull away reliably. We loved it. Fit for purpose, we often used it in preference to my company car, a big Citroen, because the Punto was far more fun. And it was ours.
Edit: p.s. The Fiat Punto was ALL ours. I only 'own' half of the new car on one of these strange finance agreements. But, for 3 years, we have the warranty and a good breakdown and recovery service. Then we'll trade it in or buy it outright (if we can still get in and out of the bugger). By the way, the Fiat was a disgusting metalic orangy brown. But we loved it just the same

I have to say Nissan Customer Service is unbelieveably good in my experience so much so that although they don't currently offer a car I actually want, I am tempted just because of it!!! The fact that you like them Mike means they really are a no brainer!
