I'd like to sing the praises of a gentlemen in north west England who successfully recabled my AKG K1000. Mike Powell, from Bolton. www.mpavservice.co.ukMike performs all kinds of Hi-Fi repairs and servicing and I will certainly be using his skills in the future. I have seen a few enquiries over UK K1000 cable replacement over the years but never seen any recommendations. It worked out well for me, I live just over thirty miles away & was nervous about posting them. They have Stefan AudioArt cable from head to toe now. I provided the cable. Mike said that the job is time consuming and requires quite a high degree of competence. If you read the sixmoons review you can see what happened to the chap on there, this was a few years back too, an expensive error for sure. Unfortunately, nowadays it's even worse. I am led to believe, AKG have no further driver replacements. Discontinued, finished, no serviceable parts. So any cock ups result in scrap. Our Mike's AKG mate, Karl Peschel, who was/is, one of the top engineers at the company is on record as saying that under normal use, the K1000 drivers should last many decades. Hope this information might be of use to someone on a similar journey in future years.

I contacted AKG Vienna regarding the availability of spare parts and here is the reply :-
Dear Nigel,
It's a pity to tell you that there are no spare parts available anymore for the K1000. This headphone is simply too old. We used the last parts somewhere in the last year. We are very sorry that we don't have better news for you.
Kind regards, your AKG service-team

At least you received a nice reply Nigel. I've been trying to obtain a spare part from Teac (UK and Europe) for months. They don't answer the 'phone and certainly do not reply to emails. Guess what product I'll never buy again!

Teac!
Yes, I sent them an email the other day asking who designed the AKG K1000 and they replied to that too! Both times within a couple of hours. Helpful people for certain. That's the way to run a business.

Yes, they probably thought, Oh boy! We have got a right one here. I had to promise not to bother them ever again before they would answer.

Some of these hi-fi engineers / inventors / designers are like rock stars though. They can bring pleasure to millions of people. I'm in awe of the legends.

Two and a half grand? erm.... that's a bit on the north side mate, I think he needs to get a bit more realistic and head quite a long way south on that price!

I love his sales patter...... "With only several thousand of them in the world, many are damaged, dirty, faulty or have been modified to a poor standard." That is an IMMEDIATE turn off "An AKG K1000 with serial number 3627. Fairly low serial number so probably considered "bass heavy". Well these don't lack bass weight or overdo it, in my opinion." Serial number 3627? Hold on, I will run (not walk) to my nearest buy it now button! "I have always handled these carefully and stored them in their box in a cool, dry and clean place." I would fully expect that to be the case and trust your word that you haven't gone swimming with them on! "Imperfections include a lack of "K1000" sticker on the top face of the box." So the box has been modified? I like boxes and a sticker free K1000 box is not something I could live with. "Everything smells neutral or new; this item is stored in a clean room that is both smoke-free and pet free." For the asking price of £2,500 I would expect them to have been stored in Kate Bush's knickers! (circa 1975) "This is the end of the headphone road for me, the pinnacle of headphone listening. If you want more spatial sound than this, speakers are the only way forward." You could also consider smoking marijuana? " I will only relinquish it with the financial encouragement requested." Looks like you'll have them for life.... enjoy them

Having said that..... 3627 is a must have...... 0 - 3626 were known duds...... 3627 - 3629 were regarded as the best three K1000 AKG ever produced........ 3630 onwards were just shite..... the golden years / the sweet spot of the K1000 were 3627 -3629..... some say the 3700 was the best ever (number 3700) the holy grail (the one to have!).
I, personally, am on the hunt for number 227......... sources deep inside the factory have told me that the 227th K1000 that was produced was assembled by god himself!
