ive heard some good things about the dt990's and like the way they look. im talking about the version they dont label as "pro". yeah they are expensive (i could buy a very nice airsoft gun for that price and go run around in the mud with my friends.) are they really worth it? how do they sound? and will they pair any good with a cmoy?

They are one of my favourite headphones and yes, they work well from Cmoys at 0 ohms (or close).
They're really comfortable and give a strong bass slam, similar to the DT770 but more open sounding. I use mine most of the time and either the Senn HD250 or DT770 for closed use.

I suggest that you go for the DT 990 Pro's with 250 Ohm's. The "Pro's" have a much better value for money and they sound better than their "Edition" counterpart (also the model with 250 Ohm's).
OK, the look of the Edition's is quite appealing, but keep in mind that the fine metal parts at the base of the headband are not really rugged. You'll pay more for the edition's and get thinner sounding headphones that are less robust than the Pro's.
I've compared both the 250 Ohm "Pro" and "Edition" variants of the DT 990's. The clamping force of the "Editions" is also too weak for me while that of the "Pro's" is absolutely spot-on after a few days of use.
I have also plans for a replacement headband cushion for the Beyer Pro series (don't expect to see that in the next few months though). I guess colourful, high-quality headband cushions could improve the look of the Pro's greatly.
Personally, I like the coiled cable of the Pro's, but that's up to individual taste. Beyer also sell the cables as spare parts (a change wouldn't be a problem).

Problem Nathan, is that you're in USA. I find Thomann in Europe are really good value but you'd be up for tax.
Here they sell around £130 and Thomann is just a bit less. Not sure of a cheap Beyer dealer in USA.
As Christian is saying, the Dt990 pro is the old fashioned looking version, not the flashy looking 2005 editions. Also, 250 ohms so it's a good idea to have an amp.

I owned the 2005 250 ohm version of the DT990 and I though they sounded pretty bad, enough I sold them and have never thought of them since. On the other hand the 2003 version of the DT880 in 250 ohm are awesome! That is a can I regret selling and hope to re-acquire someday. Attachments:

If you find a cheap dealer, then the DT 990 Pro's are a very good value. I'm sure you won't regret the buy.
IMO the sound quality is better than with my other headphones including pricey 'phones like the K702, K501, HD650, HD580 and HD25-1/II. I like these headphones too though, but the DT 990 Pro's are the best match (with me) so far.
The meaty bass of the DT 990 Pro's reminds me sometimes also of the Koss PortaPro's.
What kind of CMOY amp do you have, Nathan?

built around a single burrbrown opa2107ap. with solid caps. 1/4 inch output 3.5mm input and an ac power supply , no lights. i have it set through an excessively large (400 amp) dpdt toggle switch to change between ac, off and battery. but for some reason i cant figure out, when a battery is in, the ac side refuses to work. ac side has a hiss that i though i fixed with a change of power supply. I never got around to putting a volume pot in. i have trouble sourcing them in my area, and i dont do alot of ordering for just one or two parts. gain is set to 0. i need a good case for it though. i have a cheap, really packed in case for it right now.

Aha......
Build yourself a reputation and gain peoples' trust (but be honest) and you can go a long way!!
Quite a funny one one or two years ago- a sunglasses firm heard I was looking for a new pair of decent ones. They sent me two foc (Banyans) just to walk around and model in public with no review needed!!
So now I'm a cool dood reviewer.
Look at Superlux and their off of all of those headphones for RG members to try!! ;-)

LOL. He tells us that he thinks the HD-668B's sound like DT990's without having heard the DT990's... and he heard once DT770's (without telling us what amp/source and DT770 variant he has used):
Frans had both the HD-668B's and the Samson SR850's. He told us that both sound very similar. I trust him.
I have both the current DT990 Pro's with 250 Ohm and the 32 Ohm SR850's. I can tell you that these 'phones sound different. The SR850's are absolutely NO competition for the DT990 Pro's. I have no problems to throw my three pairs of SR850's out of the window, but I'm sure that I won't sell my DT990 Pro's. I'm almost sure that he was referrring to the DT 990 Edition's (but no clue which impedance variant he has meant). The Edition's sound a bit thin, especially with a mediocre amp (if he used any amp...). Perhaps that's why he thinks the HD-668B's are sounding similar (IMO at least the SR850's are a bit "lifeless"... not very musical, but quite linear).
Keep also in mind that the price difference is not 300 Euros versus 30 Euros. The good DT 990's are the Pro's. And those costs much less. And I have never encountered Superlux 'phones so far that need no modding or at least other earpads. If you add the AKG velours pads to the price of the 668B's, then the calculation is very different.
The DT990 Pro's sound perfect out of the box and you could also choose other Beyer pads like the softskin pads. Spare parts are also priced moderate. Try to buy replacement parts for the Superluxes....
IMO the DT990 Pro's also don't sound "cold" (far from it).

I havent heard either so cant comment, only going what everyone else says They get glowing reveiws on headfi as well Here is a headfonia reveiw labeling them giant killers www.headfonia.com/superlux-hd668b/But one thing for sure, when they have burnt in everyone speaks highly of them, and put a velour k240 pad on them and they shine even more Put the any headphone on different amps with different sources and the headphones will take on a different sound, i imagine the beyer would do things a little better, but not 230 euros better I will be getting a pair of these in the near future paddy

The DT 990 Pro's are MUCH cheaper than the DT 990 Edition's and they sound better a much lower costs. I've heard BOTH the DT 990 Pro's and the DT 990 Edition's (both with 250 Ohm's). I have also the SR850's that are very similar to the HD-668's (according to Frans). I don't say the HD-668B's are bad. They are good value, but the SQ is absolutely not on par with the DT 990 (Pro's). BTW: Head-Fi is NO reference for me, although no everything over there is bad. I can't take "reviewers" serious if they are talking about headphones they have never heard and still they are "comparing" them.

F@ck! you are really tempting me... I found them here for 129€ inc VAT (+6.99€ shipping = 135.99€) www.redcoon.es/index.php/cmd/shop/a/ProductDetail/pid/B205675/cid/68003/Do they stage as wide and deep as the 702s? the only HPs I've tried other than my K501 and K601 are the 681B and can't wear them for long due to my big head and ears. I also find them a bit "shut-in" and less "refined" compared to the AKGs though they are great for heavier stuff with lots of nice bass.

A lot has been written about the DT 990 Pro's in the "Just joined the Beyer club..." thread. Maybe a good idea to have a look there. The soundstage is not a big as that of the K702's. But it's still big. The 990's have become my main 'phones since. I wear the K702's only occasionally now. Probably that says a lot... The K702's are absolutely first class for finding flaws in recordings though. The 990's can be a bit too forgiving for that, but overall, they sound extremely musical. The guy on headfonia has heard them At the end of the day someone will like the sound of the special edt better than the pro version, it`s down to personal preference What hifi only give the special edt 3 stars paddy Beyer says that the Pro and Edition variants have the same drivers. You should also have a look in the "Just joined the Beyer club..." thread. Other similarities/differences have also pointed out there. There's a slight difference in the sound signature, because the pressure on the ears is a bit higher with the "Pro's". Thus, the "Pro's" have a bit more bass, feel warmer and more vivid. If found the "Edition's" a bit lifeless in comparision, but they are still very good 'phones.

because the pressure on the ears is a bit higher with the "Pro's". That is one of the things that holds me back, I have a rather big head and the preassure of some HP is too much for me to use them for more than a few minutes. What about the pads size? is it similar to the 701'?

That is one of the things that holds me back, I have a rather big head and the preassure of some HP is too much for me to use them for more than a few minutes. What about the pads size? is it similar to the 701'? The Edition's have felt almost a bit "loose" to me. So, at least for me, the higher pressure is not a problem, quite the contrary. One of the arguments for the K702's was the comfort. I never had a problem with the "headband of death" as others had. IMO the comfort of the K702's is better than the comfort of the Senn's (HD580/600/650), but now with the 770/990's, I don't miss something regarding the comfort. The pads of the K702's are bigger than those of the Beyer's, but the holes in the pads are about the same size. I just had a look and compared them. Generally, the Beyer pads have an even better quality than those of the AKG's, which is also not bad. So far, I like the Beyer pads the most (out of all my headphones). Personally, I have a slight problem with the K240 velours pads. The holes in the pads are slightly too small for me and there's some (unwanted) pressure on parts of my ears. The pads of the 770/990's and K701/702's are much more comfortable for me. I can live with the Senn pads (HD580/600/650's), but I like the round shape of the Beyer's and AKG's more.
