Little Pinkie V3i - first impressions
« Thread Started on Sept 22, 2007, 12:12pm »

I have received the Little Pinkie V3i this morning and my first impressions are - wow. There is an enormous improvement with increased clarity, a wider sound-stage and a more Natal fuller sound. The improvements are big enough with the x-can, but these appear small compared to that heard with the D-10. Awesome. :-X

I know it is early days, so I will let it all burn in and post a fuller review later.

My initial impressions however are that this is a serious piece of kit that really lets your equipment sing. I for one will be in the queue for another one when production begins.

Hi Robert,

Glad you like it man! How are you finding it in service with regard to "heat"?

Mike.

Hi Mike

It seems fine at the moment. Best wait for a few days to be sure.

Do they 'burn in' like other components and improve?

Yes, like everything in electronics give it a short time to "cook" before expecting the ultimate performance from it.

:) :) :)Many thanks Mike for the swift as promised delivery of the ALL NEW PINKIE V3i.this is just an initial account of first impressions."FUCKIN WOW" i will not apologise for the expletive as i genuinely feel that this beauty deserves it.i am not technically minded but i know when something is vastly improved.this is what i hear on this first audition.
WIDER SOUNDSTAGE
HUGE IMPROVEMENTS ON VOCALS
BASS IMPROVED [not over the top]MORE DEPTH BUT PUNCHY & CLEAR
MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT ON STEREO SEPERATION
MORE IMPORTANTLY I DON'T LISTEN FOR THESE IMPROVEMENTS THEY ARE THERE IT'S AS CLEAR AS NIGHT & DAY.
i honestly think we can all be fooled when adding different bits of kit, interconnects, power etc almost willing yourself to think it's better or improved.NOT IN THIS CASE.as i sit writing this i am listening to my favourite rock compilation album one that i know inside out,my god the sound is just blowing me away absolutely stunning.
i have in the past got a little bit tired of listening to music after an hour or so, skipping through tracks to find something a little more involving almost demanding a better sound, NOT ANY MORE.how can this well defined little box give all this?and apparently it will get better as time goes on,BRING IT ON!
IN THIS DAY & AGE OF INCREASING BULLSHIT ESPECIALLY FROM SOME OF THE MAJOR MANUFACTURERS IT'S REALLY REFRESHING TO GET A PIECE OF KIT FROM SOMEBODY WHO REALLY CARES AND OBVIOUSLY HAS A PASSION FOR REAL HIFI.
LONG LIVE MR. FLOYD...well done Mike ,extremely impressed already if you hadn't already guessed.
regards colin 8-)

this is an update, unlike the previous pinkie v3 [the one that caused all the hassle]the NEW PINKIE V3i remains cool, mine has remained on for over 24 hours now, permantly on.this unit is far superior to its predecessor.i have only just been dragged away from my listening position due to the fact that i needed to feed....
i have never enjoyed listening to my music so much.further to my last post i must report that everything i have listened to so far i have wanted to increase the volume. i have found it that enjoyable no listening fatigue.little nuances that have always been there are so much clearer, instruments are more defined, lead vocals as mentioned are incredible ,backing vocals don't dissapear into a mumble they too remain clear it's so easy to distiguish male/female backing singers.this all leads to the most fullfilling musical experience thus far.and it apparently will get better

I have been listening to the V3i now for 2 days and to say that I am impressed is an understatement. The sound improvement is startling.

I have always been an advocate of the importance of the mains input, and spent many hundreds of pounds improving this over the last 10 years. The LPV3i follows this belief but the sound improvement is much greater than I have achieved with other methods.

Firstly, I agree with Colin that this one runs much cooler that the V3, and mine has been on continually for 36 hours.

Now for the sound. Superb only just begins to describe it. The sound-stage has increased, the bass is tight and controlled without any boom. It has weight without drowning the music. The musical instruments are clearer and more distinguishable. I know people who write reviews talk about veils been lifted etc, but in this case I think this is the best description. My music now sounds as though someone has removed a pillow from in front of the speakers. I am listening to my music and hearing things that I had not appreciated was there before.

I have a reasonably expensive system having spent over £10k on it, but this little amp has made a big improvement. With the x-cans it is great, but in my opinion it really shines when powering the d-10. The sound improvement is immense. I can only liken it to the same improvements that I experienced when changing from £500 HiFi separates to those costing £2000. Pretty impressive for something costing less than £100.

I think this is a serious piece of kit and I have no reservations in recommending it. I will be in the queue for another one so that I don't keep having to move it from my x-can and d-10.

I have a serious question for Mike that I think would interest many other members of this forum. Have you had any thoughts on designing and manufacturing a mains conditioner into which we could plug in all of our equipment power supplies? If you could achieve half as much improvement as you have managed with the LPV3i, I am sure you will sell loads of them.

Anyway, I am sure many other people will be sending in their rave reviews shortly. I would like to congratulate Mike on such a fantastic product at such a reasonable price. Russ Andrews et al would price this in the region of £500, and it still wouldn't be as good!

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH ROBERT, MIKE WOULD MAKE A KILLING IF HE COULD MAKE A POWER SUPPLY/MAINS CONDITIONER THE LIKES OF RUSS ANDREWS WOULD SHIT THEMSELVES.

I have no intention of making a power conditioner or anything else.... it would be easy to do but I'd rather remain master of what I know than become a jack of all trades / master of none.

I'm happy the v3i is performing the way it is, you guys have brought a tear to my eyes, your happiness and musical pleasure = job done.

I'm glad you like it and thanks for taking the time to express your appreciation.

Mike.

Morning Mike,i appreciate your honesty regarding the power conditioner.you can see though why 2 members thus far would bring this up.what you have done with the PINKIE V3i is nothing short of a miracle,& obviously with all that expertise you can see where Robert & i are coming from, but i totally stand by your decision.
You do realise though you have caused some friction in our household;i have some decorating chores but all i want to do is ,as the Doobie Brothers would say is, "LISTEN TO THE MUSIC".no doubt i will be back to give a further update on the pinkie in another couple of days.
cheers Mike.

Colin and Robert
I refer you both to a previous thread that Colin was involved in. If you reread this thread you will see that it is not feasible to design a simple standard mains filter that will work for everybody. For starters , there would have to be a different version for 230/240VAC and 110/117vAC. There is also the problems with many modern premises equipped with Earth Leakage Breakers.I have no doubt that Mike is more than capable of building a superior mains filter/conditioner, but there are just too many variables, including, but not limited to , component ratings and style of mains sockets

Hi Mike, well it has been a week now of constant use of the all new PINKIE V3i.the unit has been left on 24/7 she has remained cool throughout,i haven't felt the need to turn it off as i just don,t know when music is going to be played next.my wife now spins as many discs as i do and although our musical tastes are varied & more importantly Lin [the wife] is slightly deaf in one ear due to several years of bad ear infections, now sorted out by the NHS thankfully.never throughout all the changes in my varying hifi equipment has the wife made such an observation in the music she plays.let me explain.i suspect that most people who are into hifi like myself don't always tell their spouse about the latest changes for fear of sceptical remarks etc.i gave up awhile ago & after 26 years of marriage Lin knows that i will always look out for hifi on ebay, shops etc,& as long as it doesn't impinge on the finances too much has always accepted my indulgences.
Mid-week Lin decided to have a good old fashioned blast of her favourite discs & when i came home from work the music was still being played very loudly,Lin was singing & jigging whilst cooking the tea.this is highly unusual as i mentioned before Lin is slightly deaf in one ear & anyone having suffered a blocked ear will agree music isn't great.this is the bit were it gets really interesting,Lin was all enthusiastic about the music saying how great it sounded & how clear the vocals were & just how overall the sound had improved."IS IT SOMETHING TO DO WITH THAT LITTLE BLACK BOX YOU BOUGHT?!!"........................................... :o
This is highly unusual for Lin to take any interest in anything remotely hifi but she asked the question & my reply was "ITS THE BEST MONEY I HAVE PAID OUT EVER ON ANY PIECE OF KIT.i really mean that.
Sound has improved again over this last week, everything i said before but smoother, absolutely no listening fatigue.music has never been this enthralling it just demands that you listen.ANYONE WITH A MUSICAL FIDELITY XPSU PLEASE TAKE NOTE.IN MY HONEST OPINION THE M.F. IS GOOD BUT THE PINKIE V3i IS A FAR SUPERIOR PIECE OF EQUIPMENT.DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND ORDER A PINKIE V3i AND RELEASE THE POTENTIAL OF YOUR MUSIC,it will be the best money spent, honestly. 8-)

If your DAC uses a 12-0-12 VAC supply from a "wallwart" ,it will benefit from the use of a Little Pinkie V3i. Many wallwarts are only rated at 500mA, and the Little Pinkie has around 2.5 times that current capacity, and better iron in the transformer, as well. This will translate to a SQ improvement. It also has auto resetting current overload. It is a superior product.
