I've just called my brother. He is a mechanic.
I'll pass the SR850 over to him next weekend. He can use it for a couple of weeks then and he will look out for some good replacement screws.
If he finds good and cheap replacement screws, I can send them to those who like to have better screws. I think of good/high quality screws, not highest quality. The plastic used for the other parts is also not extremely durable – so a almost indestructible and totally hardened screws is not the most cost-efficient way. But still I'd like better screws than those used by Samson.

@ Claus: If my party idea really works out, maybe I can "generate" a couple of customers for you. I'm at the very beginning with those headphone parties. My plan for the next few months are only to make tests of the concept. I don't have the entire equipment I'll need and there're are still a lot of questions to be answered. But imagine: With headphones you have almost total freedom where to make parties. No people complaining about "noise", no bulky PA equipment needed for sound and everyone could get just the sound quality they love the most. How are you going to comunicate if you all wear headphones ?? Also the dancing must look funny But I hope it will be a succes, we live in the country and can play as loud as we wish.. I would be thankfull if you could point people my way

We will test a few party concepts as soon as I have all the equipment for it. Communications should be not a big problem. With open-backed headphones you always hear what's going on. The loudness at many parties (with PA speakers) is INSANE. I think communications could be far more easier with headphones. But we will test it... Even with closed 'phones communications is not a problem (just put 'em away if you want to talk). My idea is to use iPod Touch or iPhones as source feeded by a streaming server over WLAN. If someone needs amping, then he can put an amp between the iPod Touch/iPhone and his headphones. With an iPod Touch / HD25-1/II combination you'll need no amp at all (those closed 'phones are great) and they really "stick" on your head. I have not tested the concept reasonably (still lots of questions). Before I forget it: A few pics of the SR850 with leather headband...

Have you tried to remove the do not "remove" sticker, it will add a bit of air to the picture.. Also removing the foam could be to your liking. and is easyli reversed.. My 850 is now a bastard, my old and beloved Philips HP1000 is build like the first piggie's house so it falls apart if you blow on it, so I have transplanted the drivers to the Samson phone, which has a much more sturdy construction. So I am afraid I can not help with further modding the 850. The small scratches on the headband will go away if you polish it with some black shoecream

I have high-tech boot polish for black military leather boots. I will test the boot polish soon.
Perhaps this also gives the headband more resistance against moisture.

Experimenting with the damping could be intersting. I will probably try this. I'd like to get some alternative damping materials first (so I can compare some of them).
Perhaps I'll also do the same modification as I did with my HD560 OvII. The HD560 OvII's were buyed in used condition and had no foam about the drivers anymore. It looked bad and I replaced it with very fine cotton cloth from an old and often washed t-shirt. It looks very good with the HD560 OvII. I'd say it has no negative impact on the SQ and still protects the drivers in some way.
I have only one week left. Then I'll pass the SR850 over to my brother. I hope he doesn't keep them too long. I said him a few weeks (2-3) is OK.

I have used one of claus' leather headbands for some hours now, and i must say that they really are quite more comfortable now. I had not thought that it would make that much of a difference! Much of the "cheap" feel of them are gone now when wearing them. The headband spreads the pressure much better than the stock one.

The last couple of days, I have been speculating about if I should make the ends round og straigth ?? The straigth ones can be ronded by a pair of sharp sissors, then take a black marker and paint the edge, or even better use a "Posca" pen. All exept Dave's ;D

The straight one looks better, but that is maybe only due to the better pic.

Good new headbands for HD681 and SR850 don't seem to be a problem and I think there are already many possibilites to make them (partially with leather, single-piece thick leather, textile). And additional possibility would be the material used for security-belts in cars. It's already in about the right width, is very durable and very light. Cutting the textile material from security-belts should be easy but it has to be sewed at the cut edges. As I don't own a sewing-machine I probably have to talk with my mother who has one... Textile headbands do have another advantage: The possibilites for coloring textile materials are almost endless. And you can easily do this at home. Unfortunately security-belts are mostly totally in black. What I miss are really cheap good replacement pads. You can find replacement pads on ebay (like Claus) or buy them from AKG. But in most cases the pads are almost as costly as the headphones themselves. A perfect solution would be a cheap textile headband with only a few cut edges to sew together with just as cheap ear-pad replacements. The color for the textile headband should be white because then it would be possible to colorate it with any color available as textile color. I don't own K500/K501's but I remember them to have a kind of textile material used with their pads. I've also thinked more than once about do-it-yourself pads for headphones. The use of sprayable foams or the foams Claus uses for his aquariums would be a possibility. The "outer shell" of the pads is more of a problem and not as easy to do as headbands. I have a woman in my circle of friends who is tailor. I only see her very seldom, but I can give her a call in the next few days and ask her what she thinks about it. As she is very experienced in her job, I guess she would be very helpful. I don't have a saddler in my circle of friends, but maybe it's an idea to look for one and to talk with him. I wonder if a saddler could make real leather ear-pads within a good price range (if he makes a production run of them). I'd imagine it's a lot of work and probably too costly. Finally I managed to call her (the tailor) and I got a few hints from her: There are a few ways to get cheap leather or textile. Furniture salesmen and interior decorators and a couple of other traders have collection books with samples from each textile or leather they sell. Usually this collection books are replaced one a year in the spring. The size of this samples in the collection books should be big enough for headband use. At least it would be a great way to get easily a large collection of different materials. She also mentioned that we probably could get some microfiber cloths through this way. I will try to get some collection books, but I can't promise anything. Regarding heavy textile ribbons for use as headband she has told me to ask directly the enterprises who do manufacture backpacks and the like. Maybe I can also get something from one of those shops that are liquidating old swiss army stocks. According to her it can be quite difficult to handle thick textile materials and/or leather with the sewing machine. Special strong sewing machines are used for those tasks. Most common sewing machines are designed for thin and light cloth. Instead of buying all the tools needed for handling of thick textile and leather materials, it could be an option to give parts of the work to someone who already has the right tools (tailors, saddlers or interior decorators for example).

Claus,
Though I'm no great footy fan, I think it's a great idea!
Our local supermarket is doing a loyalty points scheme where you get world cup footballs. Proper jobs, full size, to correct spec.
We've got a multiflag and a Brazil so far, hope to get an England and a Germany (to send as gifts) as well.
How will you make the flag image on the band?

My thoughts was to make it a flag with two "snips". The flags themsleves would be apr 7*12 cm. The "flagpattern" will be in leather/skin. The bad thing is that I still need to do some work in the garden, it looks like northeren France in 1916, before I can sit down and do anything else, but I hope I will get through with it in a couple of days.. It has been a shitty week. My grandmother passed away thursday and my fridge decided to stop working wedensday, the dog is in heat (meaning she is borderline crazy)..

Have now almost finished Kolind's Superlux HD660 The final finish has to be done during a cable-change, so not all there yet.. Here are some pictures.. Padded headband, courtesy of DaveK, Thanks Sewn with with my new machine, thanks wife I like that I managed to get the signs on the putside, looks better that way.. The wire that are loose between the cups needs to be desoldered, to get in place Please notice the AKGpads, they are a bit big, but the added thickness of the skin makes them stick and make a seal anyway, so no problem there..

Hi, Claus I have just read this whole thread with great interest and pleasure , and I wonder if you are still making and offering the leather bands for the HD681's to forum members. And, if you do, I would love to get my hands on one for my modded pair, and, of course, contribute to your efforts via PayPal. Needless to say, I am very impressed with the looks and functionality of these bands , especially in light of the fact that I am bald, and that plastic band on the HD681's is a pain. I hope your venture is very successful, and you make lots of money when you get it all in gear. With All the Best Wishes, imagemaker18
