I get my SCHA built and then my CD player dies When the drawer closes, it does not recognise the disc, and then goes on to randomly open and close the cd drawer. Pretty gutted, as I love the sound this old beast gives out. I've had a search around, but cannot find any info. Does anybody have any ideas, or know where I can get some information?

Wilbur Try unplugging any onboard connectors , one at a time, then plugging them back in. Some of the IDP connectors go high resistance after a period of time. I did have more info on some Arcam stuff but unfortunately,it was on my old PC which has died. Alex

When the drawer closes, it does not recognise the disc, and then goes on to randomly open and close the cd drawer. Well, can be 2 other things as well. 1) The motor is dead and didn't spin up. That s what happened to my Pioneer LD player which I'm still holding on to and put at the "dumping" ground. 2) The laserhead is already gone. What's the mileage of your Arcam CDP to have a rough idea? Normally, if a good head, can go for about 7 to 10 years if used for about 1 to 2 hours a day.

Check the spindle disc the cd sits on once the drawer is closed and the mech clamped into place, sometimes they drop a little so the toc can't read the data if the disc can't spin freely

Guys, thanks for all the other advice, it really is appreciated I had the lid of the alpha yesterday, I a must have let the evil spirits out, as after a bit of a prod around, she started working again. I think the main culprit may be drawer closed microswitch, as after working it a bit, the 'bad spirits' didn't seem to be around anymore! After having a look at the PCB, and noticing what looks like a leaky cap, the 'mod it' bug struck, so I had a really good mooch around diyAudio yesterday. Lots of good info, including the fact that Arcam are pretty helpful regarding service manuals and cct diagrams, so they have had an e-mail. A couple of questions if I may. 1. Non-oversampling? what is the perceived benefit of doing this? 2. Are their any other simple diy mods that could benefit? Obviously re-capping to a certain extent, but I'll wait until I get my cct drawings before putting anything in. Anyway heres some nice pictures! Leaky Cap(the 6800uf)? Should there be a spring here on the clamp? DAC board.

Ah, looks like the CDM4, more than likely the switch as you say, if you look at it closely you can see how it all works, make sure the screws are tight that holds the transport to the chassis, sometimes if not the bit of plastic that hits the switch doesn't always work, the switch contacts can go with age making them far less sensitive than they was too Obviously check the belts
The missing spring at the side is normal
I don't think that cap is leaking tbh, they used to glue the bigger ones onto the pcb to stop them rattling about risking possible fractured solder joints etc, a total recap is a good idea though anyway
Regarding NOS, well it has upsides and downsides, upsides people claim it sounds more natural, less digital, downsides is you lose the SPDIF output and also some HF roll off, normally a output stage needs a lot of mods fudging etc to make up for this, some people don't bother and just upgrade the op-amps etc which is easier

Thanks for the feedback and tips. The drive played up today again today, and wouldn't stay open to load a disc. Once closed it was fine, and the disc played, but I had to be quick! I should hopefully be getting the schematics this week, so will source a new microswitch, select caps and generally have a play. Have to get the old girl back on her feet.

There are a lot of old players with CDM4s that go under a tenner, so spares shouldn't be a problem. There is no spring on the outside edge of that transport.
